MX Linux is another practical option for this hardware. With XFCE it can idle around 1GB of RAM, and an even lighter desktop such as Fluxbox can use considerably less. A browser will still be the biggest memory consumer, so keeping tabs under control is more important than chasing an ultra-minimal distribution. Linux Mint XFCE is also a friendly starting point if you want something simple and well documented.
A lightweight desktop environment would be a good idea. Debian with XFCE, Linux Mint XFCE, MX Linux, or Lubuntu should all be worth considering.
