Is Microsoft Intune enough for managing macOS devices?

Does anyone use Microsoft Intune to manage Macs in their organization? I'm trying to understand what the experience is like for end users and whether Intune provides enough macOS management capability, or if it's better to use a dedicated Apple MDM such as Jamf or Kandji. I'd especially appreciate feedback on enrollment, policy deployment, scripting, SSO, and any major limitations.

The decision really depends on your requirements. We moved to Jamf because implementing our specific needs was much easier there, but with a small number of Macs we probably would have stayed with Intune. Some gaps remain compared with Apple-focused MDMs, including support for certain bootstrap application workflows, so evaluate those requirements before committing.

I recently enrolled a fleet of MacBooks. After enrollment is configured correctly, the process is mostly painless for users. There can be some frustrating setup behavior involving Company Portal and profiles—for example, setup may pause while required components are installed—but Intune can handle configuration profiles, scripts, custom XML settings, SSO, and Kerberos extensions.

If your organization already pays for Microsoft licensing that includes Intune, it’s a sensible first option and may not require an additional MDM cost. For a small Mac fleet and normal security or configuration requirements, it can cover the basics. If you need deeper Apple-specific controls, a dedicated product may be worth the extra expense.

Intune has improved a lot over the last year or two. Setup and the end-user experience are much better now, especially with Microsoft 365 integration, SSO, and related identity features. It works well for standard policies, configuration profiles, scripts, and application deployment once you learn its quirks.
