Is My CPU Temperature Reading Incorrect?

I recently did some maintenance on my PC, which involved reapplying thermal paste, cleaning out dust, and rearranging a fan. Now, I'm seeing my CPU temperatures hanging between 95-97 degrees Celsius, both when the system is idle and while gaming. I've double-checked to ensure all components are plugged in and functioning properly. Could I be experiencing a faulty CPU temperature reading?

If your temperatures are showing that high after your maintenance, it’s likely not a misreading. I would recommend reseating your cooler and checking the thermal paste application again.

Did you check your CPU temperatures before you reapplied the thermal paste? I'd be surprised if the readings are off. It could be that there was an issue with how you reapplied the thermal paste or remounted the cooler. What CPU and cooler are you using?

What tools did you use to measure your CPU temperature?

I used MSI Afterburner and MonitorHardware to check the temps.
