Is my GTX 1060 6GB still worth using in a new PC build?

I'm planning to build my first PC myself, with roughly a $1,000 budget for the parts. My current computer was built by someone else around 2017, and I'm wondering whether I can reuse anything from it. In particular, I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB. Is it still suitable for a new system, or would it hold the build back too much?

It depends heavily on what you play. The GTX 1060 can still handle lighter games at 1080p, but it lacks the performance and features expected by many current titles. If you mostly play demanding modern games, prioritize a stronger GPU; if not, reuse the 1060 and upgrade when it becomes limiting.

For a new $1,000 gaming build, Iโ€™d try to replace it rather than spend the whole budget on a new system and keep the 1060 permanently. Depending on local prices, used cards such as an RTX 3060 12GB, RX 6700 XT, or RX 6800 XT would be meaningful upgrades. Newer mid-range options with 12GB or 16GB of VRAM can also provide better longevity.

Yes, you can physically reuse the GTX 1060 as long as it still works and the new case and power supply support it. It should be fine for esports and older games at 1080p, but newer AAA games will usually require low settings and may still run poorly. With a $1,000 budget, the card would probably be the main bottleneck.

VelvetRook22: The 1060 was considered a solid mid-range card when it launched. It lasted a long time, but modern games have raised the requirements quite a bit.

If youโ€™re happy with the games and settings you currently use, thereโ€™s no technical reason you canโ€™t keep it temporarily. You could build around a newer CPU, motherboard, RAM, and storage, then upgrade the graphics card later. Just make sure the power supply has the required connector and enough wattage.
