Hey folks! I've been contemplating my future after high school for a while, and I keep coming back to Computer Science. I've been interested in computers from a young age, but I'm a bit unsure if it's the right path for me. With the job market being tough, I've heard mixed opinions on whether a CS degree is worth it. I graduate in three years, and I'd love to get some perspectives on this. If I decide to pursue CS in college, what can I do now to prepare and gain some experience? I tried freeCodeCamp before but lost momentum. Any suggestions for resources or tips to stay engaged would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and have a great night!

Enjoy your youth and focus on what you love about computers right now! Itโ€™s normal to feel uncertain about the future, especially when it comes to careers. Just have fun with your interests; there'll be plenty of time to think about work later on!

Make sure youโ€™re comfortable with math because itโ€™s a big part of Computer Science! Also, note that bootcamps focus more on practical skills and donโ€™t really cover computer science fundamentals, which is crucial for a deeper understanding. Think about your motivations and interestsโ€”if you feel that urge to outdo classmates when it comes to tech, journey on with that enthusiasm!

Find a type of project that excites you! Whether it's text-based games or quirky little websites, start programming anything that sparks your interest. Learning to read other people's code is just as important as writing your own. Just keep pushing and exploring, and youโ€™ll naturally get better!

A CS degree may carry more weight than something like freeCodeCamp, but it's true the job market can be unpredictable. Right now, itโ€™s a bit rough, but that can change quickly! Focus on building a solid LinkedIn, GitHub profile, and keeping your resume updated. The job market always has its highs and lows, so don't stress too much about where it'll be by the time you graduate.

One thing that really helped me was studying the syllabus for the programming classes I was going to take, and going through the textbook ahead of time. By the time the class started, I felt ready and actually found the material interesting! Also, definitely check out the FAQ on forums like r/LearnProgramming. Itโ€™s packed with useful resources. Having a personal project youโ€™re working on can also keep you motivated!
