Is Python a Good First Language for Learning Programming?

The language matters less than learning how to break problems down, design solutions, and think logically. Python, Java, and C++ can all teach those fundamentals. Once you understand the core ideas, learning another language becomes much easier. Try balancing practice with some theory, algorithms, and basic computer science concepts.

Python is an excellent first language because the syntax is relatively readable and you can focus on programming ideas instead of complicated setup. JavaScript is also a reasonable starting point if web development interests you, but there’s no need to switch just because another language is popular.

It’s completely fine to begin with Python and still be serious about programming. Continue with the course, revisit sections when needed, and build things that connect to your interests—even a small project related to auto mechanics could be motivating. You can decide later whether programming remains a hobby or becomes a career.

Five hours is just the beginning, so I’d keep working through the course until you understand the basic concepts. After that, start with small projects such as a calculator, a simple text game, or a tool that solves a problem you personally care about. Projects will help the material stick much better than lessons alone.
