Windows 7 feels like the best fit for my computer, but I'm concerned about using such an old operating system and potentially getting malware while playing Team Fortress 2. I want to get the most performance possible from an Intel i7-2700K, Quadro K620, and 8 GB of RAM. Would Q4OS be a good choice, or would another lightweight Linux distribution work better?

Linux greatly reduces the risk of malware compared with continuing to use an unsupported Windows 7 installation, but it doesn’t make you completely immune. Keep the system updated, avoid suspicious downloads, and check how you plan to run Team Fortress 2 through Steam and Proton before committing to the switch.
AntiX or MX Linux with Fluxbox are other lightweight options worth looking at. They may use fewer resources than a full desktop environment, although Q4OS Trinity is already quite light for this hardware.
Your i7-2700K is a 64-bit processor, so you don’t need to worry about being limited to an older 32-bit Q4OS release. With 8 GB of RAM and a K620, most lightweight Linux desktops should work well. Check that your graphics drivers and the software you need are supported before switching.
Q4OS with the Trinity desktop should run comfortably on those specifications. It’s lightweight and can feel fairly responsive, but the bigger advantage is using a maintained operating system rather than Windows 7. You could also consider Debian with XFCE if you want something lightweight with a more conventional desktop.
