My current laptop is a TUXEDO Pulse 14 Gen4 with a Ryzen 7 8845HS and 32GB of RAM. It works well most of the time, but under heavy workloads it occasionally overheats and shuts down—roughly once every ten days. It also sometimes fails to wake properly from sleep. Cleaning the heatsink and replacing the thermal paste or pads might solve the problem, so the issue isn't necessarily permanent.
I'm a software engineer and use my personal laptop for both professional and hobby programming. My development setup can reach around 30GB of RAM, especially when running tools and containers locally.
I found a 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M5 Pro chip, 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 48GB of memory, and 1TB of storage for about €2,464 excluding VAT. The regular commercial price is closer to €3,100, and it's available for immediate shipment. I'm also tempted to buy now because memory shortages may lead to further price increases.
I can afford it, but I feel guilty replacing a machine that mostly does what I need. Would this be a sensible upgrade for reliability and development work, or am I just rationalizing an expensive luxury purchase? I've used Linux as my main operating system for the past few years, so macOS compatibility and workflow are also concerns.

I moved from Windows to a MacBook for development and found the hardware, keyboard, trackpad, and general feel excellent. That said, liking macOS is personal; another developer may prefer Ubuntu and find macOS frustrating. Don’t buy it solely because of rumored future price increases. Buy it if the improved reliability and daily experience are worth the price to you.
The hardware is definitely an upgrade, especially if your development environment is already using 30GB of memory. I’d seriously consider 64GB if you plan to keep the machine for years or run several containers, virtual machines, or local AI models. Extra RAM is much harder to add later than storage.
The biggest question is whether macOS works for your workflow. Some developers love the Unix environment and the MacBook hardware, while others prefer Linux and find macOS restrictive. If your tools, containers, drivers, or workflow depend on Linux, the new laptop may feel less convenient despite being faster. You could also fix the current machine first and switch only if you still want the Mac after using a repaired system for a while.
The MacBook would be a great machine, but for ordinary programming it sounds more like a luxury upgrade than a necessity. The main reasons to buy it would be the better build quality, screen, trackpad, battery life, and the value you place on avoiding random crashes. If you spend eight or more hours a day using it and can comfortably afford it, paying for a nicer tool is not unreasonable.
Before spending that much, I’d properly service the current laptop. A thick layer of dust can block the heatsink, and simply blowing air through the vents may not remove it. Clean the fan and heatsink, check that every fan is actually spinning, and replace the thermal paste if necessary. That could eliminate the shutdowns for a relatively small cost.

That’s how I look at it too. A reliable computer is similar to a good office chair—you’re paying for something you use constantly, not just for extra benchmark performance.
