Is Rubrik Gaining Ground on Commvault in the Backup Market?

Hey there, sysadmins! I'm curious about the recent shifts in the backup and cyber-resilience world. After noticing a steep reaction to Commvault's latest earnings report, I'm wondering if they're losing ground to newer players like Rubrik, or if the rise of AI agents could be affecting their market position. I'm new to this space and trying to figure out how the backup sector is evolving. Are there any technological breakthroughs shaping the future? And is Rubrik really as stellar as people say it is? Just a heads-up, my interest here is partly for investment research, but I'm also considering a career switch into this field given the expected data growth. Thanks for any insights!

Rubrik is definitely a solid product, especially when it comes to user experience and cyber recovery capabilities. I can't really say if there's a big shift from Commvault to Rubrik, but it’s impressive for sure.

I think Veeam is also gaining some of Commvault’s market share. We just made the transition to Veeam and it was pretty easy overall! Plus, I heard Veeam recently acquired Object First to ramp up their competitive edge against Rubrik.

Most of my clients have moved away from Commvault within a few years because they found it cumbersome. In contrast, they really like Rubrik, Cohesity, and Veeam.

Honestly, I can't directly answer your question, but I wouldn't recommend Commvault to anyone – it’s just a hassle.

I think Rubrik is phenomenal! It's powerful and user-friendly, but it can be quite pricey. Their support team is exceptional; I've never had to wait long for help. I’ve used different backup solutions before, like Veeam, which felt more intuitive to me. But Rubrik just works seamlessly, whether it's restoring from the DR appliance or backing up. Just be prepared for the costs – it’s definitely on the higher end!

Totally agree on the price! But it might actually be worth it compared to what we spent on Commvault, which was a nightmare.

We switched from Commvault about five years ago. It’s a great tool, but super complex and expensive. We needed at least one dedicated backup team member just to manage it effectively. We’ve been really pleased since moving to Rubrik; it's much simpler for handling our backups.

I’ve had great experiences with Rubrik; I didn't dig deep into Commvault though. I’ve seen Rubrik’s stock doing well too, which might say something about its market traction.
