Is Running My RX 7900 XT on PCIe 4.0 x8 a Problem for Gaming Performance?

I'm curious about whether using my XFX SPEEDSTER MERC 310 RX 7900 XT on PCIe 4.0 x8 would affect gaming performance on my MSI MPG X870e Carbon. Since all four of my SSD slots are in use, I'd prefer to keep them as they are unless running the GPU at this reduced lane count would seriously impact FPS. Would I notice a significant difference?

The only time you might see a significant drop in performance is if you hit the VRAM limit, which is unlikely with your 20GB card. Since you're pushing high resolutions, the bottleneck usually occurs due to VRAM rather than PCIe lane reduction. So overall, it shouldn’t be a huge worry!

While you've halved the lanes, the impact really depends on the games you’re playing. If you’re focusing on titles like Cyberpunk 2077, you might see some dips in FPS because they are graphics-intensive, especially on max settings. But for lighter indie games, you'll be totally fine. It really comes down to your specific use.

The short answer is no, you probably won’t see a noticeable FPS drop! With the 7900 XT being a high-end card and the PCIe 4.0 x8 being quite capable, the performance difference compared to x16 is generally minimal. Some tests showed differences around 5% at most, which is hardly game-changing. Plus, at 4K resolutions, the 20GB VRAM should keep you well covered under heavy loads.
