Is SteamOS a good choice for a lightweight Linux laptop setup?

I'm considering moving some everyday tasks from Windows to Linux to improve battery life on my laptop. I mainly need Firefox, Discord, an office suite, OrcaSlicer, FreeCAD, and VS Code. However, I still need Windows for engineering software such as Autodesk applications, MATLAB, FluidSIM, Vivado, and various PLC tools that may not work reliably on Linux.

I recently watched a video about SteamOS's desktop mode and became curious about using it as my Linux distribution. Valve has a strong reputation, so I wondered whether SteamOS would offer better stability or support than other options. If it isn't a good fit for a general-purpose laptop, I was considering Ubuntu because most troubleshooting guides target it. What would be the practical advantages and disadvantages of SteamOS for this use case?

If you specifically want something with a SteamOS-like experience, Bazzite is worth looking at. It provides a similar gaming-focused setup while being intended for broader PC hardware. Even then, I’d treat it as an enthusiast option rather than the obvious choice for a laptop used for engineering and productivity work.

SteamOS is mainly designed around the Steam Deck and a console-like gaming experience. It’s based on Arch Linux, with Valve’s software and customizations added on top, but that doesn’t make it a better general-purpose desktop distribution. Its immutable design can also make installing and maintaining regular desktop applications less convenient.

For your needs, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, openSUSE, Pop!_OS, or a similar desktop-focused distribution would be more practical. Choose one whose default desktop and hardware support you like; most of the major distributions can be customized later.

Keep Windows available for the Autodesk, MATLAB, Vivado, and PLC applications. Some may work through compatibility layers, but engineering programs often depend on proprietary drivers, licensing systems, or hardware integrations that are unreliable outside Windows. Dual-booting or keeping Windows in a virtual machine is safer than assuming everything will run under Linux.

Also, make backups of your license files and other important data before reinstalling anything. Since previous updates caused problems for you, a mainstream stable release may be less frustrating than an Arch-based distribution.

For a normal laptop, I’d probably start with Linux Mint or Ubuntu/Kubuntu. They’re easier to learn, have extensive documentation, and are less likely to get in the way when you need tools such as VS Code, FreeCAD, or office software. KDE-based options like Kubuntu can give you a familiar desktop without using SteamOS itself.

You may also want to test the distribution in a virtual machine or from a live USB first. That lets you check battery behavior, Wi-Fi, graphics, the keyboard layout, and sleep/wake support before changing the installation.
