Is the 8GB Radeon 9060 XT suitable for 1440p gaming?

I'm building my first PC and recently bought a Radeon 9060 XT with 8GB of VRAM. I'm pairing it with a Ryzen 9 9900X, mainly because I found the processor at a good price, along with 32GB of DDR5-5600 memory. I still need to choose a monitor and was considering 1440p for gaming, but a friend warned me that running games at that resolution could cause excessive GPU usage and overheating. Is 1440p a reasonable choice for this graphics card, and what kind of performance should I expect? My current heaviest game is Monster Hunter Wilds, which I play at medium settings on a laptop with an i5-10500 and RTX 3060.

It depends heavily on the game. Older titles and esports games should run well at 1440p, while newer releases may require reduced settings. Some games are surprisingly VRAM-heavy, but maxing out VRAM does not automatically mean the GPU is being damaged or overheating. The card will simply reduce performance, stutter, or require lower texture quality.

A good 1080p IPS monitor is the safer purchase if you want high settings and fewer compromises. Mini-LED displays can provide better contrast and HDR, but they’re generally more expensive than IPS. The Ryzen 9 9900X is also much more CPU power than this GPU normally needs for gaming, though buying it at a large discount makes the choice more reasonable.

You can make 1440p workable by lowering demanding options such as texture quality, ray tracing, shadows, and effects. Around 60–80 FPS at medium settings is a realistic target depending on the game, but performance will vary a lot. Check benchmarks for the specific games you play rather than relying only on a general GPU comparison.

1440p should work, but the 8GB of VRAM is the main limitation—not overheating. In newer, demanding games you may need medium or low textures and settings, and you probably shouldn’t expect consistently high frame rates. For a more comfortable 1440p experience, the 16GB version would be the better long-term choice. If you want high settings in demanding games, 1080p is the safer option.
