Is the Arctic Freezer 36 a worthwhile upgrade from the Wraith Prism?

I'm using a Ryzen 7 7700 with the included AMD Wraith Prism cooler. I don't change settings or overclock, and the cooler keeps the CPU within its normal limits, but it can be fairly loud and I'd also like to get rid of the RGB lighting. My brother has an Arctic Freezer 36 A-RGB White that he no longer needs, so I may be able to get it for free. I haven't found many direct comparisons between the two coolers. My case is quite old and currently has only one rear exhaust fan; the other fans are on the CPU cooler, graphics card, and power supply. Would switching to the Freezer 36 make a noticeable difference, and is there anything I should check first?

Expect a modest but useful improvement, probably around 5–10°C depending on your case, fan curves, and room temperature. The biggest benefit may be lower noise rather than dramatically better performance. Before installing it, check your case’s maximum CPU cooler height and make sure the mounting hardware supports AM5.

It’s also worth checking the system’s airflow before drawing conclusions. Compare GPU temperatures under load with the side panel on and off. If temperatures drop substantially with the panel removed, the case is restricting airflow, and adding or replacing case fans—or eventually moving to a better-ventilated case—would help all of the components.

If you can get it for free, it’s definitely worth trying. The Freezer 36 is a stronger cooler than the Wraith Prism and should reduce both temperatures and fan noise. Your current airflow is probably adequate if the Prism is already keeping the CPU within spec, although you should check that the case supports the cooler’s height. You may also be able to sell the Prism afterward.

The Wraith Prism is usable for the Ryzen 7 7700, but an aftermarket tower cooler will generally run quieter and give the processor more thermal headroom. Since this one is free, I’d install it unless it doesn’t fit. Just don’t expect the new CPU cooler to completely fix poor case ventilation.

The case is an older ATX model that originally came from an ASUS prebuilt, and I’m not sure the exact model is still available. I’ll measure the space inside and check the cooler’s height before installing it.
