My employer recommended that I pursue the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) certification, along with a couple of AWS certifications. I work mainly in manual software testing and only have limited Linux experience—I can navigate around and handle basic tasks, but I'm not highly familiar with system administration. I've done some automated testing with Selenium WebDriver and Playwright using Python, although I wouldn't consider myself a Python developer. Is earning the CKA realistic for me, or would another certification be a better starting point?

I’d ask your employer why they want these certifications. If they need credentials for a consulting or partner program, that explains the request. Otherwise, they should provide relevant training and hands-on opportunities. Certifications are most valuable when they match the work you’ll actually be doing; collecting advanced cloud certifications without practical experience usually isn’t very helpful.
Your employer may have meant CKAD rather than CKA. For someone coming from software testing, CKAD is generally more relevant because it’s closer to the application and development side of Kubernetes. AWS certifications can also be useful, but choose ones that support your actual testing responsibilities instead of jumping straight to advanced architecture exams.
If your employer is paying for the training and exam, there’s little downside to trying. That said, the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) may fit your background better because it focuses more on deploying and working with applications, while the CKA has more cluster administration. If you’re paying out of pocket, I’d first confirm that the certification is directly useful for your role.
The exam is difficult, even for people who have studied Kubernetes. CKAD may be a more approachable first step, but either certification is much easier when you can practice regularly in real environments. Passing once doesn’t necessarily mean the knowledge will stick if you don’t use Kubernetes at work.
