Is the CKA certification worth pursuing with three years of DevOps experience?

I have about three years of experience as a cloud engineer and DevOps professional. I've stayed with the same company since starting, earned a promotion, and received good raises. I'm now considering switching jobs and wondering whether earning the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) certification would improve my prospects. Is it worth the time and effort, or should I focus on practical projects and demonstrating my existing skills instead?
Answers
The CKA can be valuable because itโs a hands-on, practical exam rather than a purely theoretical certification. Preparing for it can strengthen areas like cluster administration, RBAC, networking, and troubleshooting. That said, real projects often carry more weight than the certificate by itself. A public repository showing useful infrastructure work or documented problem-solving can make your experience much more convincing.

From an interviewing perspective, strong fundamentals and practical experience matter more than certifications. A certification can make a rรฉsumรฉ look more polished, but it wonโt compensate for gaps in troubleshooting, Linux, networking, cloud, or Kubernetes basics. If you already know the material, the CKA may help validate it; otherwise, use the preparation to build deeper skills rather than treating the exam as the main goal.

It depends on the direction you want to take. If youโre aiming for a Kubernetes-focused role, the CKA is a reasonable way to demonstrate commitment and get through initial screening. It can also help move interviews past basic qualification questions, but youโll still need to explain how youโve used Kubernetes and solved real operational problems.

Even preparing for the CKA can be worthwhile. The hands-on exercises force you to understand topics such as RBAC and troubleshooting much better than simply reading documentation. Still, pair that preparation with a small project or public portfolio that demonstrates what you can actually build and fix. The certification is most useful as evidence of practical ability, not as a replacement for it.
MellowPine47: Did you prepare mainly through a hands-on course, or did you work directly from the Kubernetes documentation?
