I'm planning a reasonably affordable server build and want to choose the CPU first. My budget is under €200, and I'd like to use DDR4 memory. Based on the benchmarks I've checked, the Intel Core i5-14600K seems like one of the fastest options in that price range. Is there a better choice for a server, especially if efficiency, core count, or long-term reliability matter more than gaming performance?
I'd also appreciate recommendations for an inexpensive ATX case with space for several 3.5-inch and/or 2.5-inch drives, along with affordable, good-quality fans. Finally, should I use an AIO liquid cooler, a tower air cooler, or the stock Intel cooler?

For a server, don’t choose only by benchmark scores. Consider idle power consumption, the number of cores you need, ECC or memory support, storage connectivity, and the motherboard’s SATA and expansion options. Older Xeon systems can sometimes be inexpensive and suitable for storage-heavy builds, but memory and platform costs may offset the savings. Also make sure the motherboard has enough SATA ports, or budget for a reliable HBA or SATA controller.
Arctic P12 and P14 fans are inexpensive and generally perform well; choose the size supported by the case and use a few front intakes with rear or top exhaust. For drive capacity, look at cases designed around storage, such as the Fractal Define series or Phanteks Enthoo Server-style models. Verify the number of included drive trays and the motherboard’s SATA ports before buying, since many consumer boards only provide four SATA connections.
For general performance under €200 with DDR4 support, the 14600K is a strong choice, particularly for gaming or workloads that benefit from high single-threaded speed. However, it may not be the best server option because it uses more power and includes overclocking features you may not need. Check the exact pricing in your area, since a Ryzen 9 3900X or 5900X bought used can offer more homogeneous cores and better efficiency for virtualization or multiple services.
Skip the stock Intel cooler for a 14600K. A reasonably priced dual-tower air cooler, such as a Thermalright Peerless Assassin-class cooler, should be more than enough and is simpler and more reliable than an AIO. An AIO is mainly worth considering if you prefer the appearance or have a specific space constraint. A contact frame for the LGA1700 socket can also help improve cooler contact and temperatures, but install it carefully and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
A large air cooler is also easier to maintain for a server because it has no pump that can fail. Pair it with sensible BIOS power limits and voltage settings rather than letting the processor run unnecessarily hot.
