Is the Dell Latitude 5430 a Good Choice for Linux and a Jellyfin NAS Server?

My workplace is selling used laptops internally, including several Dell Latitude 5400-series models and a few Macs. I'm considering a Latitude 5430 for around $200 so I can learn Linux on hardware separate from my new Lenovo LOQ 15. I'd also like to run Jellyfin and use the laptop as a NAS, since I don't want to leave my main laptop powered on around the clock. Power usage isn't a major concern because I have solar panels. How well-supported are the Latitude 5400-series laptops under Linux, and are there any driver or hardware compatibility issues I should know about?

Make sure it really is the newer Latitude 5430 and not the much older Latitude E5430. The newer model is from around 2022 and uses a 12th-generation Intel processor, so it should be well supported and powerful enough for this use. An E5430 is a 2012–2013-era machine with a third-generation processor; it can still run Linux after upgrading to an SSD and adding as much RAM as it supports, but it would be far less attractive at the same price.

Dell Latitudes are generally excellent Linux laptops, and most distributions should work with little or no tweaking. Mint, Zorin, and similar beginner-friendly distributions should be good choices. The processor, storage, networking, and other hardware relevant to a Jellyfin server should work normally.

The main possible exceptions are less essential devices such as the fingerprint reader or webcam. Those can sometimes need extra setup or may not work perfectly, but they shouldn’t affect using the machine for Linux, Jellyfin, or NAS duties.
