Is the eero Pro Wi‑Fi 7 a good upgrade from an AirPort Extreme?

I've been using an Apple AirPort Extreme for years, but it's time to replace it. I'm considering the eero Pro Wi‑Fi 7 and would appreciate feedback from anyone who has used it. What are its main advantages and drawbacks, and is it worth the price? I have a 1,500-square-foot single-family home and would like reliable coverage outdoors too, similar to what I get from the AirPort Extreme.

Eero is a solid choice for most people, especially if you want something simple to set up and manage. The units scale well if you later need a mesh system. The main downside is the cost, and some advanced networking features may require a subscription. I used Eero for about four years before moving to a more customizable system.

You may not need a mesh system for a 1,500-square-foot home. I used an Orbi setup and later switched to TP-Link Deco, but a single well-placed access point can be enough in a smaller home. Outdoor coverage will depend heavily on the router’s location, wall construction, and where outside you need the signal.

Another option is an Amplifi system. It’s made by the same broader company behind UniFi and has worked reliably for years in a home full of Apple devices. It’s generally easier to live with than a fully managed network setup, while still providing strong coverage.

If your internet connection isn’t extremely fast and you’re mainly looking for dependable coverage, an older Eero 6 system could save money while still being perfectly adequate. Wi‑Fi 7 is most useful when you have newer devices that support it, so it may not provide a noticeable benefit for every household.

If you want more control and don’t mind a slightly steeper learning curve, UniFi is worth considering. It has a polished, Apple-like feel while offering better network-management options. An integrated router and access point could work well for your home, though it may be more equipment than you actually need.
