A friend recently built a system using a Core i5-14600KF paired with a budget-friendly MSI H610 motherboard. They want to know if this combo could cause any issues or if it would be better to upgrade to a B760 or Z790 motherboard. They've already placed the order, so they're looking for advice on whether the H610 will suffice.

I'd advise returning the H610 for a slightly better board. This one likely isn’t designed for a powerful chip like the 14600KF; without proper VRM cooling, it might throttle during intensive tasks like gaming. Updating the BIOS is a must, no matter what board they choose!
For gaming, the H610 should be okay, but if your friend plans to tackle heavy multi-core tasks, they might run into some limitations.
They might have overspent on features they won't really use. The H610 motherboard limits power compared to what the i5-14600KF can handle, plus it lacks VRM cooling and RAM tuning. For casual use, it should be fine, but it won't fully utilize the CPU’s potential.

Why wouldn’t you recommend a Z790, though?
