Is the i5-12600KF a worthwhile match for an RTX 4070, or should I stay on AM4?

I'm planning a CPU upgrade for an RTX 4070 system. At 1080p and 1440p, my graphics card often isn't reaching its full potential because my current processor is holding it back. The i5-12600KF seems like a strong pairing, but I'm hesitant to move from one aging platform to another. The Ryzen 5 5500X3D is available locally, although I'm not completely confident about buying one, while the 5700X3D is either unavailable or too expensive. Moving to AM5 would also add the cost of DDR5 memory. Which option would make the most sense for gaming performance and fully using the RTX 4070?

The i5-12600KF is still an excellent all-around processor and pairs well with an RTX 4070. However, if gaming is your main priority, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D should be faster in games and lets you keep your current AM4 memory and motherboard, assuming BIOS support is available. The Intel chip makes more sense if you also want stronger general-purpose or productivity performance.

My RTX 4070 is mostly sitting idle while the CPU struggles, so my main goal is to let the card reach its full potential at both 1080p and 1440p.

The concern is understandable if it’s about the seller, but the 5500X3D itself is a very capable gaming CPU. A reliable retail source is preferable, but the chip should outperform an i5-12600KF running with DDR4 in many games. If you can verify the seller and get a reasonable warranty, it’s probably the best value upgrade without paying for a new AM5 platform.
