My brother is planning to buy a Ryzen 9 9950X bundle and is upgrading from a Ryzen 9 3900X. His current cooler is an older dual-tower air cooler and has handled the 3900X without thermal problems. We were considering the original Noctua NH-D15 because it costs about $60 less than the newer NH-D15 G2, but I haven't found much information about the first-generation cooler with a 9950X. Noctua lists an NSPR rating of 183 for this processor, though I'm not sure how that translates to real-world idle or load temperatures. He lives in Southern California, where summer temperatures can exceed 110°F, and he'll primarily be gaming and using voice chat, not running constant all-core workloads. Is the original NH-D15 sufficient, or is the G2 worth the extra money?

Reviews comparing the two Noctua generations generally show a small improvement from the G2 rather than a dramatic one. The original NH-D15 remains one of the better large air coolers, and it should keep the CPU within its normal operating range for typical gaming. Just make sure the case has strong airflow, the cooler has the correct mounting hardware, and the ambient temperature is taken into account.
For a hot climate, focus more on case ventilation and fan curves than on the small performance gap between the two NH-D15 versions. The CPU can safely boost until it reaches its thermal or power limits, so a higher load temperature isn’t necessarily a problem. I’d choose the original NH-D15 at the lower price unless the G2’s mounting improvements or slightly better performance are especially important to you.
If he’s mainly gaming, the 9950X is probably more CPU than he needs. A Ryzen 7 X3D model would usually offer better gaming value, while a 9950X makes more sense for heavy multicore work. If he’s committed to a high-end Ryzen 9, the original NH-D15 is still a reasonable choice for gaming, but consider a 240mm or 360mm liquid cooler if he expects frequent long rendering or other all-core workloads.
The original NH-D15 should be perfectly adequate for gaming with a 9950X, especially since games rarely load all 16 cores continuously. The G2 is somewhat better, but the difference is generally only a few degrees, so it probably isn’t worth paying an extra $60 if you’re buying the first-generation cooler new. Sustained workloads such as Blender renders will push the chip much harder; for that, a good 360mm or 420mm liquid cooler would be a more meaningful upgrade than moving from the NH-D15 to the G2.
A Phantom Spirit-class air cooler can still handle the processor reasonably well, but temperatures and power limits matter more during long all-core workloads than they do during gaming. It may run warm, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s unsafe.

He mostly games and spends time managing voice-chat communities, but he’s set on getting a newer Ryzen 9 model for the extra cores and perceived longevity. The main question is whether the cooler needs to be upgraded along with it.
