My brother is planning to buy a Ryzen 9 9950X bundle and is upgrading from a Ryzen 9 3900X. His current cooler is an older dual-tower air cooler, and it has handled the 3900X without thermal problems. We're considering the original NH-D15 because it costs about $60 less than the newer version, but most of the available testing seems to focus on the second-generation model. Noctua lists the original cooler with an NSPR rating of 183 for the 9950X, though I'm not sure how to translate that into realistic idle or load temperatures. He lives in Southern California, where summer temperatures can exceed 110°F, and he mainly uses the PC for gaming and Discord rather than sustained all-core workloads. Would the original NH-D15 be sufficient, or is the newer model or an AIO worth the extra money?

If he’s doing more than gaming, a 240mm or 360mm AIO from Arctic or Thermalright could be worth considering. For mostly gaming, though, an air cooler is simpler and should be adequate. A 9950X only really makes sense here if he has a reason to use its extra cores; a Ryzen 7 X3D processor would generally be the more gaming-focused choice.
Expect higher temperatures during extended full-load tasks, especially in a hot room, but the processor should remain within its designed limits and manage its clocks if needed. Gaming loads are usually much lighter than an all-core render, so the original NH-D15 is unlikely to be a problem as long as the case has decent airflow and the cooler is mounted correctly.
The newer NH-D15 is an improvement, but not a dramatic one. Reviews comparing both generations usually show only around a 2–3°C difference. I’d save the money and use the original model, or compare it with newer Thermalright air coolers, which can offer similar performance for less.
The original NH-D15 should be fine for gaming with a 9950X, especially since games rarely load all 16 cores continuously. The newer version may perform a little better, but the difference is generally only a few degrees, so it probably isn’t worth paying another $60 if the original fits your case and has proper airflow. Sustained Blender-style all-core workloads are a different story; temperatures could get high enough that a 360mm or 420mm AIO would make more sense.
A Phantom Spirit 120 SE can still handle the chip reasonably well, but sustained all-core workloads will push any air cooler hard. It should protect itself by reducing boost clocks when necessary, though an AIO gives more thermal headroom.

He’s set on a Ryzen 9000-series chip and is mainly interested in the 9950X for longevity. Since his workload is mostly gaming and Discord, the extra cores probably won’t provide much practical benefit, but the NH-D15 should still be capable of cooling it.
