I have about $500 to spend on a graphics card and found a Radeon 9070 GRE at Micro Center for $470. Would it handle 1440p gaming well, and what kind of performance should I expect in newer games?

For current games, you can generally expect high-settings 1440p without much trouble. Its VRAM capacity also gives it some extra breathing room in demanding titles. In a few years you may need to lower settings, and eventually it could become more of a medium-settings card, but it should age reasonably well.

Yes, it should be a strong 1440p card for most games. The exact experience depends on whether you want 60, 120, or 144 FPS and whether you use high settings, ray tracing, or upscaling, but it should handle the majority of titles comfortably.

That price makes it a very appealing option. A similar-class card should even manage ultrawide 3440x1440 gaming happily, depending on the title. Just check independent benchmarks for the games you play, since performance can vary a lot and ray tracing may require FSR or reduced settings.

The main thing is to define what you consider playable. Sixty FPS at high settings is a very different target from 144 FPS with ray tracing enabled, so benchmark results are more useful than a simple yes or no.
