I'm building a gaming PC around a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and originally planned to buy an RTX 5080. However, prices in Japan are extremely high: roughly ¥320,000 or more for the 5080, compared with around ¥230,000 for the RTX 5070 Ti. That is about a $500 difference, which is a significant amount for me.
I mainly play visually demanding AAA and open-world games. I'm planning to use a 1440p OLED monitor rather than 4K, and I would like smooth gameplay with high-quality visuals. Playing with ray tracing or path tracing enabled would be nice, but I'm willing to reduce settings if necessary as long as the games still look good and do not stutter.
The 5070 Ti seems more than capable for 1440p, but the 5080 offers more performance and headroom for demanding settings. Is the extra cost worthwhile at these Japanese prices, or would the 5070 Ti be the better choice? I'm also open to AMD alternatives if they make more sense, especially for this resolution.

The RTX 5070 Ti should be more than capable for 1440p AAA gaming, and the RTX 5080 generally is not worth a 30% price increase for roughly a 12–15% performance gain. At these prices, the 5070 Ti is the more sensible choice unless you specifically need every extra frame or plan to move to 4K soon.
The Radeon RX 9070 XT is worth checking as a cheaper alternative. It offers performance close to the 5070 Ti in many games and can sometimes match or exceed it in standard rasterized rendering. The important drawback is ray tracing and especially path tracing, where the 5070 Ti is significantly stronger. Since path tracing is one of your priorities, compare performance in the specific games you actually play before choosing AMD.
The 9070 XT is a strong value option, but it is not the best recommendation if path tracing is a major requirement.
Look at benchmarks for your actual games and preferred settings rather than averages alone. Ultra settings are often barely distinguishable from high settings during normal gameplay, so dropping a few settings can give the 5070 Ti plenty of headroom. For a 1440p OLED setup, I would choose the 5070 Ti and put the savings toward the monitor or future upgrades. The 5080 only becomes easier to justify if the price gap is much closer to 15–20% or if you are planning to play at 4K.
That makes sense. Paying so much more for a relatively small performance increase is difficult to justify, especially with Japanese pricing.
