Is the RX 9070 worth the extra $160 over the RX 9060 XT for a future 1440p upgrade?

I'm planning to upgrade from an RX 6600. My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600G, though I'm considering a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, along with a 650W power supply and a 1080p monitor that I may replace with a 1440p display later. I'm looking at a 16GB RX 9060 XT for $480 or an RX 9070 for $640. I'd like the system to remain usable for roughly four or five years and handle demanding games without major compromises, including future releases such as GTA VI. Is the RX 9070 worth paying $160 more for, particularly for 1440p gaming, or is the RX 9060 XT the better value? Also, would a decent 650W PSU be sufficient for either card with a 5700X3D, or would the RX 9070 leave too little headroom?

You could continue using the RX 6600 at 1440p with upscaling in many games, so thereโs no need to rush the purchase. If you want maximum performance runway, save for the stronger card; if keeping costs down matters more, the 9060 XT should still be a major improvement.

If the pricing is close, Iโd lean toward the RX 9070 rather than the 9060 XT. The 9070 is a stronger fit for a future 1440p monitor. Some buyers prefer stepping up to a 9070 XT if the price difference is small, but at $640 the regular 9070 already looks like the more balanced option.

The RX 9060 XT 16GB is still a sensible value choice, especially if you stay at 1080p for a while. It should provide a substantial upgrade over the RX 6600 and the extra VRAM is useful for newer games. Neither card can truly be called future-proof for five years, thoughโsettings, upscaling, and frame generation may become increasingly important.

Before buying the CPU, compare the availability and pricing of the 5700X3D and 5500X3D. At 1440p, either can work well because the GPU becomes the main limit, especially with an RX 9070. Also check the exact PSU modelโ650W is sufficient on paper, but quality and age matter more than the wattage label alone.

The RX 9070 is probably worth the extra $160 if 1440p and longevity are the priorities. It offers roughly 50% more performance than the RX 9060 XT, which gives you more room for demanding games. A good-quality 650W PSU should handle a 5700X3D and RX 9070, assuming it has the required power connectors and is not an old or low-quality model.
