Is the RX 9070 XT worth £50–£100 more than the RX 9070 for 1440p gaming?

I'm upgrading from a four-year-old RX 6600 XT, mainly with upcoming games like GTA 6 in mind. I also play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Battlefield 6, and I'd like stronger performance at 1440p on high settings. I'm comparing the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, with about £50–£100 separating the models depending on the specific white version. Is the XT worth paying extra for? Also, should I wait for potential Black Friday or Christmas discounts, or are GPU prices more likely to rise?

I wouldn’t count on a major seasonal discount. GPU prices have already been moving upward, and increased demand could push them higher rather than lower. Since you tend to keep cards for several years, buying the XT now may make more sense than waiting to save a relatively small amount.

The RX 9070 XT is roughly 10–15% faster on average, so I’d say it’s worth considering if the price difference is only around £100. It offers performance closer to the higher-end cards and gives you a little more headroom for demanding games or eventually trying 4K.

At the current prices, the regular RX 9070 may be the better value. It’s only around 10–15% slower, while the XT uses roughly 80 watts more power and runs somewhat hotter. If the gap is closer to £135, I’d save the money; if it’s only £50–£100, the XT becomes much easier to justify.

For such a long upgrade cycle, I’d lean toward the 9070 XT if it fits your budget and case. Choose the least expensive reputable model that has the features you want, and consider selling the old 6600 XT to offset some of the cost. Just check the power connectors and clearance carefully before buying.

I’m mainly looking at the white versions because they match my case, and the difference between those two models is about £100.

The standard 9070 can also be a good choice if you’re comfortable tweaking it. A mild overclock can narrow the performance gap to around 5–6%, while it still draws less power and runs cooler. That makes it appealing if efficiency and noise matter more than having the maximum performance.
