I'm putting together a gaming PC with a budget of around $700 and haven't purchased the parts yet. The Ryzen 5 5500 costs about $70 less than the Ryzen 5 5600X, so I'm wondering whether the savings are worth the difference in gaming performance. Would choosing the 5500 be a reasonable way to stay within budget, or would the 5600X be the better choice?

That said, the 5500 can still be a decent low-cost gaming CPU if saving $70 lets you buy a better graphics card or enough RAM. The GPU usually has a bigger impact on gaming performance at this price point.
For a new $700 build, the 5500 may make sense as a cost-cutting option, but expect somewhat lower CPU performance because it has less cache and weaker overall specifications than the 5600X. Compare the complete build rather than focusing only on the processor price—the best choice depends on which CPU lets you build the strongest balanced system.
If you can afford the 5600X without sacrificing the graphics card or other important parts, get the 5600X. If the $70 difference pushes you over budget, the 5500 is acceptable, but make sure the savings go toward a stronger GPU or at least 16 GB of system memory.
