I'm upgrading my mother's PC, which currently has an older Ryzen 5 2400G. Locally, I can buy a Ryzen 5 5500 for about €100 or a Ryzen 5 5500X3D for around €200. Her most demanding games are solo World of Warcraft and V Rising at 1080p and 60 FPS. Is the 5500X3D worth paying twice as much for, especially since I don't expect to replace the whole PC anytime soon?

The 5500X3D is substantially faster than the regular 5500, particularly in games like World of Warcraft. The two CPUs share a name, but the 5500 is based on a weaker design and performs more like a Ryzen 5 3600. If you want a strong final upgrade for the AM4 platform, the X3D model is the better long-term choice, even if the current games are not pushing the system very hard.
For 1080p gaming, the 5500X3D makes the most sense if the system has a fairly powerful graphics card or if you want extra CPU headroom later. With an older GTX 1080 and a 60 FPS target, the regular 5500 may already be sufficient, though the 5500X3D will provide better minimums and leave more room for a future GPU upgrade. A Ryzen 7 5700X is another option, but it may not be good value if it costs significantly more than the X3D chip.
The 5700X costs roughly 40% more in my area than the 5500X3D. The GTX 1080 is the current card, but it could be replaced later if it becomes the limiting factor.
The extra cache can help World of Warcraft a lot, especially in busy areas and group content. For strictly solo play at 60 FPS, the benefit will be smaller, so the 5500 is adequate if keeping costs down is the priority. The 5500X3D is mainly attractive as a long-term AM4 upgrade rather than something she urgently needs today.
She avoids raids and dungeons because group content stresses her out, so the upgrade would mostly be for general longevity rather than those specific scenarios.
Before buying anything, verify motherboard compatibility. PCs originally sold with a 2400G often use an OEM A320 or similar board, and some models never received BIOS support for Ryzen 5000 processors. Even boards that support regular Ryzen 5000 CPUs may not support X3D chips, so check the exact motherboard model and its supported BIOS versions first.

That’s the main reason I’m considering it. Nothing is struggling right now, but getting one of the better AM4 chips while they’re still available seems like a sensible way to extend the system’s life.
