I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 3600 with an MSI B450 Tomahawk, 32GB of DDR4 memory, and an RTX 3070 Ti 8GB. I'm looking to upgrade the CPU primarily for gaming and would like to stay under $500 without replacing other major components. Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D the best option for this setup, or is there a better-value upgrade?

The 5800X3D is the best straightforward choice, but pricing matters. If you can find a Ryzen 5 5600X3D locally for significantly less, it offers nearly the same gaming experience and could be the better value. Availability depends heavily on your region.
For gaming, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is essentially the top-end upgrade for the AM4 platform. It should be a major improvement over the Ryzen 5 3600, especially in CPU-limited games, and you can keep your motherboard and DDR4 memory. Check the required BIOS version before installing it.
A platform switch could also be worth comparing. An Intel Core i5-14600KF with a compatible DDR4 motherboard may fit close to the same budget, and some retailers offer inexpensive AM5 bundles. However, the 5800X3D is the simplest upgrade since it should only require a BIOS update and doesn’t require reinstalling Windows or replacing your memory.
If gaming is the priority, I wouldn’t choose a Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X over the 5800X3D. Those CPUs are better for productivity workloads with lots of cores, while the X3D chip is more focused on gaming performance. You’ll also want a decent aftermarket CPU cooler because these processors can run warm.
Gaming is definitely my main use, so that helps narrow it down. I’ll check the BIOS version and cooler requirements before ordering.
