Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D worth paying extra for over the Ryzen 5 5500X3D?

I'm upgrading from a Ryzen 7 5700G because Blade & Sorcery gives me roughly 40โ€“50 FPS during the worst moments, and I'm aiming for a much steadier 90 FPS in VR. My GPU doesn't appear to be the limitation: I get about the same performance even when lowering the graphics settings, while playing at 1832ร—1920 per eye on high settings. The Ryzen 5 5500X3D costs around 4,239 MXN (about $250), while the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is around 6,680 MXN (about $400). I can afford the 5800X3D, but is its extra performance worth paying roughly $150 more, or would the 5500X3D be enough for this CPU-heavy game?

The 5800X3D will be faster in this kind of CPU-heavy game, thanks to its extra cores, threads, and higher boost clocks. Itโ€™s usually around 10โ€“15% ahead, so itโ€™s the better performer if getting as close as possible to a stable 90 FPS matters more than the price.

At those prices, Iโ€™d lean toward the 5500X3D. Saving roughly $150 for a relatively modest gaming uplift is pretty compelling, and the 5500X3D should still be a major improvement over the 5700G. The 5800X3D is a good choice too, but its value depends on how much youโ€™re willing to pay for that extra headroom.

MellowCactus42: Thatโ€™s the part Iโ€™m unsure about. I can pay for the 5800X3D, but I donโ€™t want to spend the extra money if the difference wonโ€™t be noticeable in VR.

Since lowering the graphics settings doesnโ€™t change your FPS, the game is probably limited by CPU performance or the simulation workload. The 5800X3D is the safest option for maximizing frame rates and frametime consistency, but the 5500X3D should still be capable and may be the better buy at $250.
