I'm choosing a CPU for a gaming PC with a Radeon RX 9070 XT, and I'll mainly play at 1440p or 4K. I'm comparing the Ryzen 7 7700, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and Ryzen 7 9700X. In the benchmarks I've watched, they perform very similarly with this class of GPU, but the 7700 costs more than $100 AUD less than the 7800X3D. Is the 7800X3D worth paying extra for, or would the 7700 or 9700X make more sense?

There isn’t a universal reason to always buy an X3D processor. Match the CPU to your games and monitor. With an RX 9070 XT at 1440p or 4K, I’d pick the 7700 for value, the 7800X3D for high-refresh competitive gaming, and the 9700X mainly if you also need better productivity performance.
If you mainly play competitive esports games and care about very high frame rates or smoother lows, choose the 7800X3D. Its extra cache can help more in those situations, even at 1440p. For normal single-player gaming at 1440p or 4K, the cheaper CPU is usually the smarter buy.
For mostly AAA games at 1440p or 4K, I’d save the money and get the Ryzen 7 7700. At those resolutions, the RX 9070 XT will usually be the limiting factor, so the difference between these CPUs may be tiny. The 7800X3D becomes more appealing for competitive games, very high refresh rates, or wanting the best possible 1% lows.
