Is the Ryzen 7 9850X3D bundle worth it for a gaming upgrade and Proxmox build?

My main gaming PC currently uses a Ryzen 9 5950X. When I built it, I underestimated how much better the X3D processors could be for gaming. I now have some money available and want to experiment with Proxmox, so my plan is to upgrade the gaming system and move the AM4 parts into a separate machine for virtualization.

I'm considering a bundle with a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, an ASUS X870E motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory. I also have a custom water-cooling loop with a very large radiator, along with a sufficiently powerful PSU, so I would like to make use of that hardware. The 9850X3D is only slightly more expensive than the 9800X3D, which is why I'm leaning toward it instead of a 7800X3D bundle.

I realize the overclocking headroom is probably limited and that choosing the higher-end chip partly because I already have an elaborate cooling setup may be excessive. Since this upgrade is not urgent, should I choose a cheaper B850-based bundle, consider another processor or platform, or wait for a seasonal sale? I'm especially interested in whether the X870E motherboard offers any practical benefit for this use case.

Intel’s higher-end options may look attractive on price and general-purpose performance, but your existing setup changes the calculation. Your current AM4 cooler and water block can carry over to AM5, whereas switching platforms could require new mounting hardware or a new block. Since the 5950X will still serve as the processor in your virtualization system, the productivity advantage of buying an all-rounder CPU is less important. If you tend to keep systems for several years, a higher-end AM5 bundle can make sense, but the cheaper B850 option is probably the better value.

The cooler compatibility is an important factor. Buying new Intel mounting hardware would reduce the apparent price advantage, and I already have a 16-core CPU available for the secondary system. I’m still considering the options, but the B850 bundle is currently the front-runner.

The 9850X3D is a top-tier gaming choice if the budget is comfortable, but don’t expect a dramatic overclocking gain. Modern processors are already pushed close to their limits from the factory, especially X3D models. The large water loop is still useful for keeping temperatures low and noise down, but it shouldn’t be the main reason to spend more on the motherboard.

I’d compare the B850 bundle carefully before paying extra for X870E. The additional chipset features sound impressive, but they’re mostly conveniences rather than gaming performance upgrades. Three M.2 slots are already plenty for most systems, and even USB 3.2 speeds are more than enough for many external devices. Put the savings toward something with a more noticeable return, unless you already know you need the extra connectivity.

One small caveat is that faster USB standards can involve lane-sharing or bifurcation compromises, so the extra connectivity isn’t always a pure benefit.

Unless you specifically need extra M.2 slots, USB4, more rear USB ports, or Wi‑Fi 7, the X870E board probably isn’t worth the premium. A comparable B850 board should handle the 9850X3D perfectly well, including normal overclocking or tuning. A single-CCD X3D processor simply cannot draw enough power for the stronger VRM hardware to make much practical difference. Wi‑Fi 7 is mainly useful with a compatible router and excellent signal conditions, while most storage and peripherals won’t benefit much from USB4.

That matches what I’m hearing. The bundle options limit the motherboard choices, but the B850-E version looks increasingly appealing and would save a substantial amount.
