I just bought a Ryzen 5 5500X3D and need to choose a CPU cooler. I already have the AMD stock cooler, but I've heard it may not provide enough cooling. A Thermalright Peerless Assassin is available to me for about $40 CAD. It seems like it could be overkill for this processor, but the price is reasonable. Should I test the stock cooler first, or is upgrading to the Peerless Assassin worthwhile? I'm also open to smaller, cheaper cooler recommendations.

Try the stock cooler first and monitor temperatures under gaming and heavier workloads. If the CPU stays within reasonable temperatures and performance is stable, there may be no urgent reason to upgrade. If you do want a better air cooler, the Peerless Assassin and Phantom Spirit are excellent choices for the money, even if they’re somewhat more than this CPU strictly needs.
If you prefer something more compact, a Thermalright Burst Assassin 120 EVO or Assassin Spirit 120 EVO would be reasonable alternatives. They take up less room around the memory slots while still offering a substantial improvement over many stock coolers. The larger Peerless Assassin is still a worthwhile choice if it fits your case and the price works for you.
The Peerless Assassin is a great deal at $40 CAD and will run cool and quietly, but it is probably more cooler than the 5500X3D requires. Before buying, check that your case supports its height and that the front fan won’t interfere with your RAM. A smaller single-tower cooler could be enough if space or budget matters.
Better cooling can sometimes let an X3D processor sustain slightly higher boost clocks—roughly 100–200 MHz in some situations. That might help by a few percent in a CPU-limited game, but it’s still sensible to test the stock cooler before spending money.
