It doesn't matter if it's one stick or two; all the RAM in your system operates at the same speed, so you can use a single stick without any issues. As for XMP, it's considered a form of overclocking since it allows you to run the RAM at speeds higher than the standard settings, but it's really just using predefined profiles tested and approved by the manufacturer.
