Is there a true pay-as-you-go mobile Wi‑Fi hotspot with no subscription?

I'm looking for a standalone portable Wi‑Fi hotspot that I can buy once, keep switched off most of the time, and activate only when needed. I'd use it as a backup during power or home-internet outages and while traveling in the car so the kids can use one or two iPads. I don't want to add anything to my employer-provided phone plan, and I'm hoping to avoid a monthly subscription. Ideally, I'd just pay for the mobile data I use whenever I turn the hotspot on. Does a service like that exist?

You could look into prepaid eSIM data services, such as Ubigi, if your phone or a spare device supports eSIM. That lets you purchase data only when you need it and keeps it separate from your work plan. For a dedicated hotspot, you’d need a compatible hotspot that accepts the eSIM or a physical prepaid SIM.

A portable hotspot with a prepaid SIM is probably the closest option. The catch is that most providers sell data in packages with an expiration period, such as a certain number of gigabytes that must be used within 30, 90, or 365 days. You may not find a plan where unused data lasts indefinitely, but low-cost prepaid options can work if you choose a long expiration period.

If your work plan blocks hotspot use, a separate personal phone or inexpensive unlocked phone can serve as the hotspot. A pay-as-you-go SIM in that device may be simpler than buying specialized hardware. Just keep in mind that even prepaid service usually has some time limit, so occasional users may end up paying for data that expires.
