Is This Camera-Hacking Extortion Email a Scam?

I received an email claiming that someone hacked my device, accessed my camera and microphone, and recorded private videos or photos. The sender demanded $1,000 and gave me a two-day deadline. I only noticed the message after that deadline had already passed, and I'm extremely worried. They did not include any recordings or other proof. What should I do, and how can I check whether my computer is infected?

The fact that the deadline passed and nothing happened is another strong sign that it was empty intimidation. An email address or password mentioned in the message doesn’t prove the sender accessed your device; old data leaks are often used to make these scams sound convincing. Change any reused passwords and enable two-factor authentication as a precaution.

Camera or microphone access is technically possible if a device is actually infected, but this particular message doesn’t provide evidence of that. Run a reputable, up-to-date malware scan, install system updates, and review which apps have camera and microphone permissions. You can also cover or disconnect devices when you aren’t using them.

Try searching a distinctive sentence from the email in quotation marks. You’ll likely find that the same template has been sent to many people. Don’t engage with the sender, and save the message or its headers only if you want to report it to your email provider or local authorities.

This is a very common bluff-based extortion scam. If the sender had genuine recordings, they would usually include specific proof, but these messages are typically sent to large numbers of people to frighten someone into paying. Don’t reply, don’t pay, and don’t click anything in the email. Mark it as spam and delete it.
