I've used the same phone charging cable for about two years, but today it suddenly wouldn't fit into my phone. When I inspected the connector, I found two large white crystal-like pieces inside and removed them. The connector still looks unusual: compared with other cables, it seems to have only about four or five gold contacts on each side instead of around ten. It's a charging-only cable, but I'm unsure whether the missing-looking contacts or the white material indicate damage. Is it safe to keep using?

A charging-only cable can have fewer contacts than a full data cable, so the contact count by itself isn’t necessarily a problem. However, white crystals or other material inside the connector are not normal, especially if the cable suddenly stopped fitting. Don’t keep using it—replace the cable and check the phone’s charging port for debris or damage before plugging in another one.
Without a clear photo it’s hard to identify the material, but a connector that physically changed shape or collected unknown residue should be treated as damaged. Avoid forcing it into the phone, since bent contacts or debris could cause a poor connection, overheating, or damage to the port. Use a known-good replacement cable instead.
It is only meant for charging, so the smaller number of contacts may explain that part. I’ll replace it rather than risk damaging the phone.
