Is This Dell 4GB DDR4-2400 RAM Suitable for a Gaming PC?

I found a Dell-branded 4GB DDR4-2400 memory module being sold at a surprisingly low price. Could I use it in a regular gaming PC, and what makes it so much cheaper than other RAM? Are there any compatibility concerns I should check before buying, such as ECC, registered memory, or the type of DIMM?

For a new build, I would avoid basing the system around this memory. Aim for at least 16GB using two matched 8GB sticks so you get dual-channel performance. The extra speed matters more on some platforms, particularly older AMD AM4 systems, where DDR4-3200 can perform noticeably better than 2400MHz.

It should work if it is standard non-ECC, unbuffered desktop DDR4. Dell branding by itself is not a problem, but check the listing carefully because ECC or registered server memory usually will not work in a normal consumer motherboard. Also confirm the return policy in case the module is incompatible.

It is not necessarily an amazing bargain just because it is inexpensive. Low-capacity 4GB DDR4-2400 modules are common and have limited use today, while comparable used memory kits can offer twice the capacity and much higher speed for only a little more money.

The low price is mainly because it is only 4GB and runs at DDR4-2400, which is close to the slow end of DDR4. A single 4GB stick is far too little for a modern gaming PC, so you would need several modules to reach a reasonable capacity. A used 2x8GB DDR4-3200 kit is usually a much better value.
