I've been building PCs since 2017, but this would be my first genuinely high-end system. I already purchased the ASUS ROG Cronox case and MSI RTX 5080, and I care a lot about the final appearance, although I still want sensible performance and value.
The system will mainly be used for competitive 1440p gaming and some 4K single-player games. I'd like it to remain capable for at least five years. I'm planning a custom water-cooling loop eventually, but I'll start with a 360 mm AIO. I may also add more matching fans and sleeved GPU and motherboard extension cables later.
The current parts are a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, Arctic Liquid Freezer III Pro 360, ASUS ROG Strix X870E-E motherboard, 64 GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, a 4 TB WD Black SN850X, an RTX 5080, the Cronox full-tower case, and an 850 W be quiet! Pure Power 13 M power supply. Is anything missing or significantly overbuilt, and where could I reduce cost without compromising the look or gaming experience?

You could save a substantial amount with a cheaper motherboard, standard RTX 5080 model, less expensive memory, and a more affordable case while keeping similar gaming performance. A 4 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD is already extremely fast for games, so paying a premium for a PCIe 5.0 drive is unlikely to make a noticeable difference. That said, the builder prefers the current case and cooler-looking components, and some cheaper GPU models may run hotter or louder, so the savings have to be weighed against those preferences.
For gaming alone, several parts are much more expensive than necessary. The 9950X3D and premium X870E board make more sense for heavy productivity work than for gaming, especially since you use another computer for software development. A less expensive AM5 board and reasonably priced 64 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit should perform almost identically in games. The memory and SSD prices in this list also look dramatically inflated, so those are the first prices I’d verify.
The main question is whether you need the workstation features. If this is strictly a gaming PC, a lower-tier motherboard and a gaming-focused Ryzen chip would be more rational, while 64 GB of RAM is already plenty for a five-year gaming target. An 850 W quality ATX 3.x power supply should be sufficient for a 5080, but check the manufacturer’s recommended wattage and use the native high-power GPU cable rather than improvised adapters. Also confirm the case supports the radiator placement, GPU length, cable routing, and future reservoir or pump hardware before starting the custom loop.

I’m open to saving money on the motherboard and storage, but I don’t want to replace the case. I also prefer a quieter, cooler 5080 model, and the cheaper-looking alternatives aren’t appealing for this build. Since it’s an expensive system, I’d rather not downgrade the power supply just to save a small amount.
