I've just ordered the most expensive PC I've ever built, centered around an RTX 5090. My primary use will be workstation tasks and heavy AI workloads, where the card's 32GB of VRAM and compute performance are important to me. I'll also use it for occasional 4K gaming.
The parts are:

- ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 OC
The 1500W power supply was actually cheaper than the 1200W model when I bought it. I'm still choosing a monitor and am considering the ASUS ROG Strix XG27UCG because I want a 4K display with reasonably accurate colors and strong gaming performance. Does anything look poorly matched, or are there upgrades I should make before finalizing the setup?

You may eventually want more than a single 2TB drive. AI models, datasets, caches, applications, and project files can fill that surprisingly quickly. Keeping the operating system and active projects on separate drives can also make maintenance easier, so leaving an M.2 slot available for expansion would be useful.
The NH-D15 is a capable air cooler and avoids pump or leak concerns, although it’s worth checking memory and case clearance. A cheaper dual-tower cooler may offer similar performance, while a good liquid cooler could help with sustained all-core loads. The North XL gives you plenty of room, so focus on front-to-back airflow and make sure the large GPU has adequate support and clearance.
For AI work, 64GB of RAM may be enough for your current projects, but it’s the part I’d watch most closely. Large models, CPU offloading, datasets, and multitasking can consume memory quickly. Since the board has room for expansion, you can move to 128GB later if monitoring shows that you’re paging to storage or running out of headroom.
Linux is often the smoother choice for CUDA and AI tooling, and it can be faster for some development workflows. If you depend on Adobe applications, though, Windows or a dual-boot setup may be more practical. The operating system decision should be based on which software is essential rather than on benchmark claims alone.
Unfortunately, I rely heavily on the Adobe ecosystem, so Windows is still the practical choice for me.
The main question mark is the Ryzen 9 7900X. It should be perfectly usable for 4K gaming and many workloads, but the rest of the system is extremely high-end, so a 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X or 9950X3D could be a better fit if your productivity software benefits from the extra cores. That said, using the 7900X to keep money available for the monitor, storage, or future upgrades is a reasonable budget decision.
That was basically my reasoning. The 7900X covers what I need right now, and the money saved can go toward a better display or other parts that affect my workflow more. I can upgrade later if the system starts limiting me.
The 5090 makes sense if you genuinely need its VRAM and Blackwell performance for inference or other GPU compute. It would be excessive for a gaming-only build, but that isn’t what you’re building. Just remember that the GPU’s VRAM limit can still matter with very large models, so check the memory requirements of the specific workloads you plan to run.

The power supply is overkill, but not a bad choice if it was cheaper than the lower-wattage option. It has the right modern connectivity for a high-power GPU. I’d also consider a UPS if your electricity is unreliable, since losing a long-running render or training job can be much more expensive than the UPS itself.
Before buying the monitor, compare it with newer 27- or 32-inch 4K OLED options that have good text handling and color modes. For workstation use, check measured color accuracy, panel coating, brightness behavior, burn-in coverage, and connectivity rather than choosing purely by refresh rate. A 32-inch 4K display may also be more comfortable for productivity, while a color-focused professional monitor is worth considering if accurate work is more important than gaming features.
I’m also looking at newer ASUS OLED models and will compare their color performance and productivity features before deciding.

I’ve tested my usual workflow and 64GB should be adequate for now, though I wouldn’t be surprised if I expand it later.
