Is upgrading from 16GB to 32GB RAM worthwhile if I regularly use around 14.5GB?

My computer consistently shows around 14.5GB of RAM in use during normal activity. I usually have a game running alongside a browser, YouTube or Spotify, and sometimes Ableton with multiple plugins. I use two monitors and occasionally notice a brief black screen or several-second pause when switching between an intensive game and another application. Otherwise, the system feels reasonably fine. Since memory prices seem to be rising, I'm wondering whether upgrading from 16GB to 32GB now is worthwhile, or whether I should wait until I experience more obvious problems.

The amount shown as โusedโ RAM isnโt the whole story because the operating system may be using spare memory for caching. The more useful things to monitor are committed memory, page-file activity, stuttering, and whether the system becomes unresponsive. If you arenโt swapping heavily and performance is smooth, thereโs no urgent need to upgrade.

Check your memory usage immediately after a fresh restart, then compare it while gaming, browsing, and running Ableton. Also leave the page file enabled and watch whether disk usage spikes when the slowdown happens. If the page file is being used regularly or you see frame-time spikes, 32GB is a sensible upgrade. If not, waiting is perfectly reasonable.

You could upgrade now if you want guaranteed headroom, particularly because youโre on DDR5 and can carry the kit into a future system depending on the platform. But donโt buy solely because the usage number is 14.5GBโcached memory can be reclaimed, and higher RAM usage by itself doesnโt mean the computer is running out.

That said, 14โ15GB on a 16GB system leaves very little headroom. Games, a browser, music software, and plugins can easily push you into paging, which may explain the brief pause or black screen when switching tasks. Going to 32GB would give you a much more comfortable buffer and could eliminate those stutters, especially since you use the computer for gaming and music production.

MellowPine7!: The only noticeable issue is the short delay when I open a browser while gaming. Ableton can also reach around 50% CPU usage with several plugins, although the system is otherwise usable.
