Is upgrading from a GTX 1080 to an RX 9060 XT 16GB worthwhile?

I've been using the same PC for about four years, with a GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition as my only graphics card upgrade. I'm considering switching to a Radeon RX 9060 XT with 16GB of VRAM. I don't really use Nvidia's software features, so the interface and ecosystem aren't important to me. My processor is a Ryzen 7 3800X. Would this be a worthwhile upgrade, or should I keep the GTX 1080 for now?

The 9060 XT looks like a strong value option, but moving from Nvidia to AMD can mean giving up some features and possibly dealing with occasional driver quirks. Driver problems may be less widespread than online discussions suggest, but itโs still worth checking current reports for the games you play. Also compare its price with nearby higher-tier cards before buying.

The RX 9060 XT should be roughly twice as fast as the GTX 1080, with much more VRAM. It would make higher settings, better frame rates, FSR, frame generation, and some ray tracing more practical. Your Ryzen 7 3800X should be capable of supporting the upgrade, although the CPU could limit performance in some games at lower resolutions or very high frame rates. The real question is whether your current GPU is holding you back and whether the price fits your budget.

Before deciding, consider what you actually use the PC for, which games or applications are struggling, and whether the GPU is definitely the bottleneck. If your GTX 1080 still delivers the performance you want, saving the money may be smarter. If you have a specific game or workload that needs more performance, the 9060 XT would be a substantial improvement.

I wouldnโt upgrade just because the card is newer. Do it if you need more performance now, especially for modern games or demanding settings, and can afford it comfortably. If your system is still good enough and you donโt have a clear use case, waiting is reasonable.
