I built my PC around 2020 or 2021 with an MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk, 32GB of 3200MHz RAM, a Ryzen 5 5600X, and a Zotac RTX 3060 Ti. It still performs well, but I'm considering moving from 1080p to 1440p and would like to play games such as The Witcher 3 next-gen, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and Oblivion Remastered at high settings. The main thing bothering me is the card's 8GB of VRAM, so upgrading to a 16GB GPU sounds appealing for newer games and some extra longevity. I was looking at the 16GB Radeon RX 9060 XT, but I'm unsure whether its performance increase would justify the cost. Would upgrading the Ryzen 5 5600X to a Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X provide a meaningful improvement, or would a GPU upgrade make more sense?

There’s nothing wrong with upgrading if you understand exactly what you’re paying for, but replacing parts just to make the system feel newer isn’t necessary. The 3060 Ti is still a strong card, so benchmark the games and settings you actually care about before buying. Extra VRAM helps, but it doesn’t automatically make a card a worthwhile upgrade.
Your 3060 Ti should handle both games, especially at 1080p, but getting high settings at 1440p is a different goal. The 16GB RX 9060 XT would give you more VRAM, but the performance uplift is only around 20–25%, so it may not feel like a major upgrade for the money. I’d either keep the 3060 Ti for now or save for a substantially faster card such as an RX 9070.
For moving to 1440p, look for a used RTX 3080 or RTX 4070, or consider an RX 7900 GRE if you find one at a good price. Those would provide a more noticeable performance increase than the 9060 XT, although you should check power-supply requirements and condition carefully with used hardware.
The 3060 Ti has aged unusually well, so it can be worth waiting instead of making a small sidegrade. Check independent benchmarks using your 5600X and compare total cost, average frame rates, and 1% lows. Cleaning the card and optimizing or undervolting it are reasonable temporary steps, but new fans or a PSU won’t increase gaming performance unless the existing parts are failing or inadequate.
A Ryzen 9 5900X or 5950X probably won’t improve your 1440p gaming experience much because the GPU will usually be the limiting component. They can help with heavily threaded productivity work, but for gaming on this platform, a 5700X3D would generally be the more relevant CPU upgrade. Even then, I’d prioritize the GPU unless you’re seeing CPU-related frame-rate drops or already have a high-refresh-rate target.
That’s probably what I’ll do. I’d rather wait for an RX 9070 deal than spend money on a relatively small upgrade.
