I'm considering replacing my Ryzen 5 3600X with a Ryzen 5 5500, but I have a limited budget and don't want to replace my whole system. My current setup has an RTX 3060 12GB and 32GB of RAM. Would the Ryzen 5 5500 provide a noticeable improvement for newer games and competitive gaming, or should I keep saving for a better AM4 processor?

If you want a cost-effective upgrade, look for a Ryzen 5 5600, 5600X, or 5600XT. They offer a more noticeable improvement without requiring a new motherboard and should pair well with an RTX 3060. Check your motherboard’s BIOS support before buying.
There’s no urgent need to upgrade just because the system was originally bought in 2023. The 3600X is still usable with an RTX 3060. Upgrade when you actually encounter CPU-limited frame rates or stuttering, rather than expecting newer games alone to make the 5500 worthwhile.
For a substantial upgrade, save for an X3D chip such as a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or another reasonably priced X3D model compatible with your board. Those processors can provide much better gaming performance and frame-time consistency. If the budget is tight, keeping the 3600X for now is better than buying a 5500.
The Ryzen 5 5500 would basically be a sidegrade from the 3600X, so you’re unlikely to see a meaningful gaming improvement. Your current CPU also has more L3 cache and supports PCIe 4.0, while the 5500 is limited to PCIe 3.0.
That makes sense. I mainly want better minimum FPS in newer and competitive games, so I’ll compare prices for a 5600 instead of jumping to the 5500.
