I'm considering upgrading my Ryzen 5 3600X in 2027, but I have a tight budget and don't want to replace the whole platform. My system has an RTX 3060 12GB and 32GB of RAM. Would a Ryzen 5 5500 provide a meaningful improvement for newer games and competitive gaming, or should I keep saving for a better AM4 processor?

For a truly noticeable AM4 upgrade, save for an X3D processor if one is reasonably priced, such as a 5700X3D or another compatible X3D model. Otherwise, keeping the 3600X and saving your money is sensible. With an RTX 3060, the CPU may not be your main limitation in many newer games, especially at higher resolutions.
The Ryzen 5 5500 would be more of a sidegrade than an upgrade. While it uses the newer Zen 3 architecture, it has only 16MB of L3 cache and supports PCIe 3.0, whereas your 3600X has 32MB of cache and PCIe 4.0 support. You’re unlikely to notice a worthwhile gaming improvement.
If you want a cost-effective upgrade, look for a Ryzen 5 5600, including the non-X version, assuming your motherboard supports it with a BIOS update. It can provide roughly 15–20% more gaming performance in CPU-limited situations. A 5700X or 5800X3D-class chip would be a more substantial upgrade, but only if you find one at a good price.
The main reason I’m considering an upgrade is that I bought this system used in 2023, and it had already been running since 2019. I’m worried the 3600X won’t be enough for upcoming games or competitive titles.
