Is upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5600 to a 5600X3D worth $90?

I'm using a Ryzen 5 5600 with a B450 motherboard and an RTX 3080 Ti. I want to extend the life of this platform before doing a full upgrade, and I can move to a Ryzen 5 5600X3D for about $90 after selling my current CPU. A 5700X3D is currently too expensive. Would the 5600X3D provide a worthwhile gaming improvement, especially for better frame-time consistency and future longevity?

The 5600X3D is a solid gaming upgrade for this platform, but donโt expect the same jump people describe when moving to a 5800X3D or 5700X3D. It can run warmer than the regular 5600, so make sure your cooler is adequate. At $90, though, itโs a sensible longevity upgrade if you play CPU-heavy games or plan to upgrade the GPU eventually.

It depends heavily on the games and settings you use. In CPU-limited games, especially at 1080p or with high refresh rates, the extra 3D V-Cache can provide a noticeable boost and much better 1% lows. If your 3080 Ti is already fully utilized, the average FPS increase may be small, though smoother frame times are still possible.

For a net cost of $90, Iโd consider it a reasonable way to finish out the AM4 platform. Some games can see roughly a 15โ30% improvement when the CPU is the limit, and the stronger minimum FPS can make gameplay feel more consistent. Just confirm that your B450 BIOS supports the chip before swapping it in.

Iโd skip it if you mostly play at high resolutions or graphically demanding settings where the GPU is already maxed out. The upgrade is much less compelling at 1440p or 4K unless you also plan to use a faster graphics card later.
