I'm considering replacing my Ryzen 5 7500F with a used Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which costs just under $300 where I live. I could sell the 7500F to recover some of the cost, but I'm also wondering whether it would be smarter to wait for the newer 9800X3D to become more affordable. My system has a Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and I mainly play Marvel Rivals along with occasional AAA games at 1440p. I don't always prioritize maxed-out graphics or ray tracing. The 7500F generally pushes the GPU to around 90–100% utilization, but Marvel Rivals can suffer noticeable frame-time drops and poor 1% lows during large team fights. Would the 7800X3D meaningfully improve those dips, or would the game's optimization and GPU limitations make the upgrade hard to notice?

For most AAA games at 1440p, the RX 7800 XT will still be the limiting component, so average FPS probably won’t increase dramatically. However, the 7800X3D’s extra cache can improve frame pacing and 1% lows in CPU-heavy situations, especially large fights in Marvel Rivals. Check your CPU and GPU utilization during the actual slowdowns rather than only looking at average usage.
If the current performance is acceptable outside of those occasional fights, waiting is also completely reasonable. Most of your AAA gaming will remain GPU-limited at 1440p, and upgrading only makes sense if the 7800X3D’s price is low enough after selling the 7500F. I wouldn’t upgrade solely for future-proofing unless you plan to keep the system for several more years.
That’s the dilemma. The system is good enough overall, but the team-fight drops are distracting, and the used price makes the 7800X3D tempting.
The 7800X3D is a strong upgrade if smoother lows are your priority, and just under $300 used is a fairly attractive price. It should give you more headroom for future games and may help in CPU-heavy battles, but it won’t fix every stutter if Rivals is simply poorly optimized or the GPU is the part struggling.
The 7500F already seems capable of driving the GPU well, based on the high GPU utilization. The main benefit here would be smoother frame times rather than a major jump in overall performance.

The GPU usually sits around 90–100%, but the team-fight drops are the main reason I’m considering the upgrade. I’m not expecting a huge average-FPS increase.
