I'm considering replacing the Ryzen 7 3700X in my current build with a Ryzen 5 5600X3D and a CPU cooler. How practical would this upgrade be in terms of temperatures, power consumption, RAM or cooler clearance, and overall CPU performance? I'm also wondering whether the roughly $180 price is reasonable. I'm not near a major computer store, although I might be able to visit one when friends travel to a nearby city.

The upgrade should be straightforward if your motherboard supports the 5600X3D with a BIOS update. The 5600X3D is usually a worthwhile gaming upgrade because its extra 3D cache can improve frame rates and consistency, even though it has fewer cores than the 3700X. For heavily threaded tasks, the 3700X may still be competitive. Power draw and heat should be manageable, and you probably don’t need an especially large cooler as long as your existing cooler is compatible with the AM4 socket. Just verify the cooler’s mounting hardware and make sure the updated BIOS is installed before swapping CPUs.
The fan I mentioned is included as part of the CPU cooler, so I’ll check whether the existing cooler and mounting bracket are already sufficient.
