Is upgrading from a Ryzen 7 5700X to a 5800X3D worth it for gaming?

I have some budget available for a CPU upgrade and currently use a Ryzen 7 5700X paired with an RTX 5070. CPU-heavy games often perform poorly for me, while the graphics card usually does not seem to be the limiting factor. I could move to AM5, but DDR5 memory is expensive right now, and buying new RAM, a motherboard, and a CPU starts to approach the cost of building a new system. Would upgrading to a 5800X3D be a worthwhile gaming-focused improvement, or should I keep my current setup and wait for AM5 and memory prices to become more reasonable? I mostly want a short-term upgrade, and I would prefer not to replace the graphics card unless it becomes necessary.

If you stay with AM4, the 5800X3D is basically the best gaming option, but the jump from a 5700X will not be as dramatic as the jump from an older Ryzen 3000 processor. It is most worthwhile if your games are genuinely CPU-limited and you play at settings or resolutions where the RTX 5070 is not already the bottleneck. Otherwise, saving for a future AM5 build may provide better value.

I would either keep the 5700X for now or sell the existing motherboard, CPU, and RAM and move to AM5. Spending over $300 on a 5800X3D is a fairly large investment for a platform that has no future upgrade path. A newer entry-level AM5 processor can match or outperform it in many games while giving you room to upgrade later. That said, the cost of DDR5 and a new motherboard may make waiting the more sensible choice.

For CPU-heavy gaming, the 5800X3D can be a meaningful improvement over the 5700X, especially for frame-time consistency and 1% lows. Your RTX 5070 is also a strong match, so this combination should remain capable for several years. The main downside is that AM4 is a dead-end platform, so there will not be another worthwhile CPU upgrade later. If you want a simple gaming upgrade without replacing the rest of the system, it makes senseโ€”particularly if you can find the chip around $300.

The graphics card probably does not need replacing soon unless you move to demanding 4K gaming. For a quick, gaming-only upgrade, the 5800X3D and RTX 5070 should make a very capable pairing. If the current memory and platform costs make AM5 uncomfortable, waiting is preferable to forcing an expensive full-platform upgrade.
