Is upgrading from a Ryzen 7 7700X to a 9850X3D worthwhile for 4K gaming?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 7 7700X with an ASUS Prime X670-P WiFi, an RTX 4090, and a 4K gaming setup. I usually play with DLSS set to Performance, and I'm considering upgrading to a Ryzen 7 9850X3D, which costs about €450 ($525). Would this provide a noticeable improvement, or would it make more sense to keep the 7700X for now? I'm also concerned about damaging the AM5 socket or retention mechanism while replacing the CPU. Is an AM5 contact frame useful for additional protection? Finally, I've seen reports of Ryzen 9000 processors failing on some ASUS and ASRock motherboards. Could my ASUS Prime X670-P WiFi be affected, and is BIOS version 3222 sufficiently up to date?

An AM5 contact frame generally isn’t needed for extra socket protection. The standard retention mechanism is designed for the processor, and a contact frame won’t prevent careless installation or bent pins. Replace the CPU carefully, avoid touching the socket contacts, and don’t apply excessive force.

The upgrade can make a meaningful difference in CPU-bound games, competitive titles, and situations where DLSS allows the RTX 4090 to render at very high frame rates. If you can sell the 7700X and the cost is comfortable, the 9850X3D may be worthwhile, but the benefit will vary much more by game than by resolution alone. For the reported Ryzen 9000 motherboard failures, verify that your board is running the latest stable BIOS and AGESA release listed by ASUS; BIOS 3222 by itself doesn’t confirm whether every relevant fix is included.

Unless the 7700X is causing a specific problem or preventing you from reaching your desired frame rate, this sounds more like an optional upgrade than a necessary one. A 4090 and 7700X are already a very strong combination, so keeping the CPU and upgrading later may offer better value.
